This e-learning module offers you basic knowledge on composting and mushroom growing. It is intended for (new) employees active in composting or mushroom production. Mushroom Essentials is also very instructive for people employed in the supplying industry. It gives a very overview of the different stages in the composting and growing process. Mushroom Essentials is based on the basic knowledge described in the Mushroom Signals book. The module contains practical questions and is completed by a test and certificate. It takes about 6 to 10 hours to complete the course.
You can follow the course at your own pace, whenever it suits you best. On average, the complete course takes around 6 to 10 hours to finish. If you prefer to move faster, you’re free to do so and if you need more time, you can take it without any pressure.
Once you start, you will have full access to the course for one year, giving you plenty of flexibility to learn in a way that works for you.
This e-learning course guides you step by step through the complete mushroom production process. From fundamental knowledge to practical application on the farm, all essential aspects are covered in a clear and structured way.
The course begins with an introduction and general background on mushrooms. You will then explore the key stages of the production process, followed by an in-depth look at composting and its different phases (Phase I, II, and III).
Next, the course focuses on the importance and preparation of casing soil, explaining how to create the optimal conditions for successful cultivation. The growing process itself is then covered in detail — from filling the growing room and mycelium development to cooling and the formation of flushes.
Finally, you will learn about harvesting techniques and complete the course with a final test and certification.

The course is intended for people who are new to the industry ans whose work requires understanding of the processes of mushroom cultivation. These can be new employees of suppliers, new employees of compost yards and mushroom production farms or potential investors.
